Pinwheel Sampler Top Complete!!

I have finally finished my pinwheel sampler top! Rhonda's FAL must be working! That and Judith finished her beautiful civil war sampler top last week and I decided it was crazy that hers was finished after a few weeks and mine was still not complete after months!! So thank you guys for motivating me to get this finished! :)

Pinwheel Sampler top complete!
(Please excuse the terrible photo! I am home alone and this was the only way I could get a photo of it!)

So now the next question how on earth should I quilt it?! I decided the other day that I hadn't really thought this part through because I am going to back it in this...

Anna Maria Horner Loulouthi flannel Maiden

and my quilt top it white... so I don't know whether to quilt in a light blue thread perhaps? I have also never quilted with a flannel backing so I am thinking something simple would be best!
Any ideas?!

  1. Machine or hand-quilting? I've often used flannel as a back (though maybe not as big as this one) and I have't really had to simplify the quilting.

p.s. Be sure the flannel colors don't show through.

  2. It's beautiful! Congratulations on putting the top together. That backing fabric is also wonderful. I would either quilt it with all white/ivory thread or try using a different thread colour in the bobbin. I think just using a light neutral will not detract from the backing if it is a lovely flannel, but you could practice a bit at the edge of your quilt sandwich to see how it looked. Whatever you choose, I am sure this quilt will be lovely to use so I hope you keep going on it.

  3. Wow M! This is stunning! And I love those cute wee pinwheel cornerstones! Treat flannel just the same as cotton, and make sure your tension is spot on if using a different coloured thread in your bobbin. How about a diagonal pattern/straight lines running through each of the blocks, with some additional quilting in the diamonds that get created? Jxo

  4. Yay for the finished top! No constructive tips on the quilting from me, I'm afraid, I just have a vague idea I would try some diagonal lines on it (as Judith suggests too).

  5. Love the quilt top Manda. Just keep the quilting simple and big stitches if you are hand quilting.

  6. so so so pretty! i would probably send it to a long arm quilter. i would be afraid i would mess it up if i were to try to quilt it with my little machine. i love it though and it is going to be so so snuggly with that flannel backing!!
